Richmond
Palace and Spanish Royal Visitors
On Richmond Green, there remains part of what used to be Richmond
Palace.
Richmond Palace was a royal residence from 1327 to 1649 . Henry
VII, Henry VIII and Elizabeth I all lived there at some point.
When Henry VIII married Catherine of Aragon in 1509 they celebrated
Christmas that year at Richmond palace.
Catherine was officially the Queen of England from 1509-1533.
In 1554 the marriage of Mary I and Philip II of Spain took place.
The honeymoon was spent at Richmond Palace and also at Hampton
Court.
It is a thought
worth holding that when you walk through what remains of the Palace,
one of Spain's greatest historical figures, Philip II of Spain,
also visited there. |
